    Dissertation Project

    • Migration, Forced Migration, Slavery and Creolisation Marked by Global Crisis

    • The Historical Area of the Lower Mississippi Delta as a Fracture Zone of Globalisation, 1720-1820
    • Academic Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Hubertus Büschel / Prof. Dr. Jörg Nagler

    • From 1720 onwards, the so-called German Coast of Louisiana was settled by indentured servants. While originating from various regions of nowadays Germany and different places all over Europe, for instance from Alsace, Hungary or Switzerland, these migrants were altogether marked as Germans by early French census-takers. They soon became to be known as the Germans of Louisiana. As such they were to be incorporated into the historiographies of the Creoles of colonial Louisiana.

    • Taking this observation as a starting point, my thesis aims at exploring the everyday life and the cultural history of these migrants at the German Coast. In addition, linkages will be drawn from their local histories to global processes of transformation. Most significantly, the failure of John Law's Company of the Indies, the Seven Years War, and the Haitian Revolution will be considered. Thus, I hope to sharpen our understanding of the formation of the Creole culture in Louisiana, its social hierarchies, and its construction of identities. More generally, I hope to provide a reconceptualization of Creole cultures, hierarchies and identities in the Circum-Caribbean from 1720 to 1820.

    Postgraduate Forum 2011

The Postgraduate Forum (PGF) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Amerikastudien (DGfA) is a venue for young scholars working in American Studies who have completed their MA (or equivalent) to discuss their work and meet their peers.
The 2011 PGF was hosted by the GCSC and the Department of English at Justus Liebig University Giessen from 4-6 November, 2011. During this three-day conference, young scholars in the field presented their current research - such as doctoral work, essay projects, or Habilitationsschriften - as work in progress and debated it with the group. There was no topical restriction and we welcomed contributions from various disciplines such as the study of American culture, literature, history and politics.
Selected contributions will be published in the online journal COPAS (Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies).

A conference program including some additional information is available on our website at http://gcsc.uni-giessen.de/pgf2011.
