Intersecting identities - Gender, ethnicity and sexuality in contemporary New Zealand fiction

In the 21st century Aotearoa New Zealand is ?diverse?, as ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and various other social identities beyond the ?classic triad? of ?race-class-gender? intertwine to shape the lived experiences of local women and men. In the context of a second-wave of New Zealand feminism(s) that has increasingly occupied itself with feminism?s ?proper object? of study and broad critiques of racism, ethnocentrism or heterosexism, women (and men) have been talked about not as an internally homogeneous group but as heterogeneous and likely to experience their multiple and inseparable ethnic, gender, and sexual identities in terms of intersecting forms of social marginalisation and privilege. Profoundly entangled with the women?s movement, Maori ethnic politicisation and cultural revival in the context of the Maori Renaissance have posed challenges to a monocultural conceptualisation of Aotearoa in cultural politics and narrative representation. Alongside an advancement of poststructuralism these developments have shaken epistemological certainties, neat identitary affiliations, and reductive categorisations and have complicated (the strategic use of) essentialist identity categories as a legitimate basis for collective interests and political activism. Against this backdrop, issues of ?difference, diversity, and intersectionality? are ?timely and important? (Campbell/Michelle/Simon-Kumar 2010: 5) and have recently been discussed in the context of local conferences, central publications, and women?s and gender studies programmes around the country. However, attention to intersecting identities and integrating multiple differences into feminist analysis is not entirely new as explicit intersectional theorising has had its local forerunners in the studies of lesbian and/or radical Maori women like Donna Awatere, Linda Tuhiwai Smith, or Ngahuia Te Awekotuku; critical commentators who have urged that ?power, strengthened by the ?divine right of heterosexuality?, cuts across all cultural, ethnic, racial and social boundaries? (Te Awekotuku 1993 [1978]: 191). The current debate on theorising complexity thus looks back on a variety of historical precursors that have gradually come to dismiss unspecified social categories and additive hierarchies of oppression in favour of inseparable conceptions of identities more finely attuned to how complex social patterns of identities can both heighten privilege and deepen disadvantage. As easy victim-offender-dichotomies were largely dismissed, the question became less about which category preceded others, and more about how categories were mutually constituted. In a study that speaks to and ranges across various disciplines it is hence imperative to direct attention to locally modified research perspectives and ?nuances of geography in shaping lives, identities and communities? (Gorman-Murray 2009: 5) when describing the complex nature of intersecting identities in Aotearoa. Therefore, this thesis argues that intersectionality is indeed a travelling research perspective that has only recently gone on a journey to the Pacific and, as an explicit undertaking under the label ?intersectionality?, is a rather new phenomenon to the study of literature and culture in general and New Zealand Studies in particular. In order to ?intersect? intersectionality itself with narratological convictions and to analytically apply it to New Zealand fiction, the relevant debates need to be historicised and contextualised and the following questions need to be addressed: How has intersectionality changed on its way to the Pacific and which aspects of intersectional theorising are specific to a New Zealand context? Does intersectionality offer a heightened level of attention to formerly neglected phenomena or is it rather a conceptual leap with regard to New Zealand culture? Which adaptations are necessary for intersectionality to be a fruitful contribution to (New Zealand) literary studies? Which are the factors that have led to intersectionality?s acceptance (or rejection) in Aotearoa? And what do we see differently, if we look through an intersectional prism?
